The third annual Dwayne McDuffie Award for Diversity in Comics reception will be held February 18, 2017, in Long Beach, CA during the Long Beach Comic Expo.

The motto of The Dwayne McDuffie Award for Diversity in Comics comes from Dwayne's own words, "From invisible to inevitable."

"The Dwayne McDuffie Award for Diversity in Comics is the very first award ever established in my husband's name," said Dwayne's widow, Charlotte (Fullerton) McDuffie, "and we are tremendously proud that in just its third year, both the comic book and animation industries are already beginning to see some evidence of the DMAD's powerful mission statement demonstrably influencing reality by helping a more diverse range of outstanding creative voices finally find some inclusion in the media, with the careers of our first two winners and finalists starting to take off at major entertainment companies. To paraphrase Dwayne: Everyone deserves to see themselves represented in the media. And everyone deserves to participate in telling their own story."

Long Beach Comic Con Spotlight - Baron's Beauties
Baron's Beauties sells toys and accessories. It is a very personal booth, combining the work of my creativity and imagination with slightly random items that made me think Shiny!

I create unique and sometimes extravagant cloth parasols. I embellish my parasols with beads, tassels, fringe, lace, and other decorations. There is even a Harley Quinn inspired parasol.

Most of the parasols are large, but there is a also small child size option an extra large version. Parasols are available in a variety of colours.

There are fans to provide portable air conditioning to accompany my potable shade. They come from Africa, China, Japan, Spain, and Thailand. The Totoro fans are my personal favorite.

I also make the pockets, goblet covers, and some of the hairsticks in the booth.

The hand made patches highlight my inner geek. From the rare Don Quixote patch (tilts at windmills is the story of my life) through Daleck jokes -- the selection is eclectic. My inner geek has a large Shakespeare section.

Other friends make the hand etched metal disk art, pins and hairties, and the leather eye patches.

I carry an amazing range of puppets. Animals from dragons to platypuses. Magnetic Personalities from Superheros to Tesla. Cuthulu puppet is a best seller.

There are wondrous walking sticks that contain clocks, telescopes, compasses and flasks.

I really need to take this call, it's my agent...
Then really, take it outside. Please be courteous and no cell phone usage when you are at panels, events or in programming rooms.

To complete my costume, I carry a large battle-axe that I hone to razor sharpness every day. It's cool for me to bring that, right?
Ummm, seriously? Props are one thing, but anything that could take an eye out, could hurt someone, or make the cops (or my mother) take it away from you, is not allowed.

I need to blog frequently... is there wi-fi?
Long Beach Convention Center (LBCC - hey, those are OUR initials, too!) does offer wi-fi service on the promenade level for a small fee. Launch your browser and you'll reach their homepage.

See what people are saying about our shows...

"LBCC was a blast! You guys do such a terrific job of putting on a convention. This is my 4th LBCC and as long as you keep doing what you're doing, I'll keep coming back. Everyone there is super friendly and it's so easy and well organized, which makes it a lot of fun. My favorite thing to do is meet comic book creators, get signatures and get sketches in artist alley. I love that you have well established names as well as lots of fresh talent to discover. Seriously, from top to bottom, you all do a great job with the show. Kudos to everyone on your staff!"
    - Chris Kiefer

"My husband and I really love attending your convention. We have been attending since the first Long Beach Comic Con and it has become our favorite comic book convention. Since we are from San Diego, we take a "mini vacation" in Long Beach. We are super excited for this year's event. You have created a really Awesome comic convention!"
    - Rachel Fogg-Lara & Ramon Lara

"I had the opportunity this last weekend to walk the Long Beach Comic Con. The past 3 years I have attended as a budding young (well old) artist and enjoyed my time in the Artist Alley. From the veteran creators of the comic industry to the new faces looking to tell their own stories, there is an overall drive of creativity, energy and passion for the comic medium. The diversity of styles, content, ages and viewpoints just show how much people love comics."
    - Chris Waterman for Bleeding

"Long Beach Comic Con treated the pros and the fans to a real treat. I especially enjoyed the relaxed surroundings and actually got to spend some time with some real special people as well. This is the kind of show we will keep coming back to year after year. congrats to everyone that made it happen."
    - Jimmy Palmiotti

"Intimate enough to mingle with the artists, yet big enough to inspire awe.... the LB Comic Con started something that will hopefully continue to grow and inspire year after year!"
    - Jim Lujan

"It was a pleasure to attend the Long Beach Comic Convention. What I liked best was how easy it was to get to the convention. The best part of this comic convention was it was about comics!!! The main reason I attended was to browse Artists Alley. I saw all my favorites and noticed a few new ones. I think the venue was perfect. Downtown Long Beach offers a beautiful view to go along with the shopping center around it. Thanks for a great time and I can't wait to attend next year, and many more to come."
    - Jarrod Kawashima, Geoffrey's Comics

"A Comic Book Convention with more comic books on the vendor floor than anything else! How refreshing! I loved that I could speak with comic book artists without feeling overwhelmed by humongous crowds."
    - Rachel Bieber, City of Torrance Reference Librarian

"You could not have asked for a better comic con, than the Long Beach Comic Con. It being the first year of the show, we (Fiction House Mafia) had no idea what to expect. We had heard the buzz of guests that would appear. J. Scott Campbell, Jeph Loeb, Jim Lee- to name a few. One of the best things about the show is that it was well rounded. Where some of the shows you don't really get the chance to converse with your favorite creators and they managed to pull it off. It was awesome!!! If you're an independent creator take into consideration this convention, because the focus that they put on their booths, artist alley tables, is really second to none. We had an artist alley table and sold out of every book we took."
    - Albert Morales (Artist, El Mystico), Fiction House Mafia

"I had such a blast at Long Beach Comic Con! There was a wide variety of things to see and do and a great lineup of guests. As a creator it was a great chance to network with other creators but I also had fun attending the show as a fan!"
    - Brendan Creecy
